Privacy policy

We collect your name, contact details and information about your property so we can prepare a solar quote and talk to you about it. We do not sell your information. You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and complain to us or to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner if you are not satisfied.

1. Who we are

This policy applies to Solar.co.nz Ltd, which operates solar.co.nz and is the agency responsible for the personal information described here under the Privacy Act 2020.

Privacy enquiries, access requests and correction requests go to our privacy contact at hello@solar.co.nz, or by phone on 0800 5 SOLAR (0800 576 527).

2. What we collect

When you request a quote or a callback, we collect the information you give us:

  • Your name, phone number and, if you provide one, your email address.
  • Your property address.
  • Information about the property — its type, whether you own it, how many people live there, and roughly what you spend on power.
  • Anything else you choose to tell us during the quote process or on a call.

Your property address and your phone number together identify you and identify where you live. We treat that combination with the care it deserves: it is collected only to prepare and discuss a quote, and it is shared only as set out in section 6.

We also collect technical information automatically when you use the site — see section 8.

3. Why we collect it

We collect this information so that we can:

  • Work out what solar system suits your property and prepare a quote.
  • Contact you about that quote, and answer questions about it.
  • Arrange and carry out an installation if you decide to proceed, including the network connection application to your lines company.
  • Meet our legal and regulatory obligations, including those relating to electrical work.
  • Improve how the site and our service work.

You do not have to give us this information. If you do not, we will not be able to prepare a quote for you, because the quote depends on the property.

4. How we collect it

We collect information directly from you — through the quote form and the callback form on this site, by phone, and by email.

We may also use publicly available information about your property, such as satellite imagery and published sunshine-hour data, to size a system before we speak to you.

5. Call recording

Where a call to or from us is recorded, we will tell you at the start of that call, and we will tell you why. Recordings are treated as personal information under this policy and are subject to the same access, correction and retention rules as everything else we hold about you.

6. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only where it is needed to do what you asked us to do:

  • Our own installation teams, so they can quote, design and install.
  • Your lines company, where a network connection application is required for your property.
  • A finance provider, only where you ask us to refer you and only with your separate, explicit consent. We will always ask first, and you can say no without it affecting your quote.
  • Our service providers, who process information on our behalf under an obligation to keep it confidential and to use it only for the purpose we give it to them for.
  • Anyone else where the law requires or permits it.

7. Marketing, and the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007

If you ask us for a quote, we will contact you about that quote. That is the purpose you gave us the information for.

If we send you marketing beyond that quote conversation, we will do so only where you have agreed to it or where the law otherwise allows it. Any marketing message we send will identify us clearly and carry a working unsubscribe. You can opt out at any time by using that link, by replying, or by telling us on the phone, and we will action it promptly.

8. Cookies and tracking

This site uses cookies and similar technologies for:

  • Analytics, to understand how the site is used and which pages people find useful.
  • Advertising and conversion tracking, including tags that record when a quote form is completed.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some parts of the site may not work as well if you do.

9. Storage and security

We hold your information in secure systems operated by us and by our service providers. Where a provider stores or can access information outside New Zealand, we require it to protect that information to a standard comparable to the Privacy Act 2020. Access is limited to the people who need it to do their job.

We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you if something happens that we are required to notify you about.

10. Retention

We keep quote information for as long as we need it to answer questions about your quote and to follow up if you ask us to. Where you go ahead with an installation, we keep the records for as long as we are required to for warranty, electrical compliance and tax purposes.

When we no longer need your information for any lawful purpose, we delete it or de-identify it.

11. Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and you can ask us to correct it if it is wrong.

Contact us using the details in section 1. We will respond as soon as we reasonably can and within 20 working days. There is normally no charge. If we cannot give you what you asked for, we will tell you why.

12. Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, tell us first using the details in section 1 — we would rather fix it directly, and we will look into it and come back to you.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz, or on 0800 803 909.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The current version is always the one published here, and the date it took effect is shown at the top of the page. If we make a change that materially affects how we handle information we already hold about you, we will tell you.
